The National Institute of Open Schooling

The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) formerly known as National Open School (NOS) was established in November,1989 as an autonomous organisation in pursuance of National Policy on Education 1986 by the Ministry of Education (MOE), Government of India. NIOS is providing a number of Vocational, Life Enrichment and community oriented courses besides General and Academic Courses at Secondary and Senior Secondary level. It also offers Elementary level Courses through its Open Basic Education Programmes (OBE).Government of India through a gazette notification vested NIOS with the authority to examine and certify learners registered with it upto pre degree level courses whether Academic, Technical or Vocational. Association of Indian Universities, vide letter No . EV/11(354)/91/ 25 July, 1991 issued Equivalence of Senior Secondary Certificate Examination of NIOS.

The key purpose of NIOS is to provide primary, secondary, senior secondary, vocational, and life skill education to a diverse group of learners which include differently or specially enabled students. It also offers teacher training courses for early childhood and elementary education.


NIOS Details: Secondary Education Program

The Secondary Education Program of NIOS (earlier called National Open School) is equivalent to secondary education of the 10+2 school education systems of other recognised school education boards of India. Through this program a student can obtain education which is equivalent to class 9 and 10 of the regular education systems of other recognised school education boards in India.

Secondary Education Program: Eligibility


A candidate can apply if his or her age is minimum 14 years or more as on 31st July of the year of admission/or 31st January and if he or she has passed class 8 or successfully completed the NIOS OBE Program.

However, if a candidate can satisfy the age criteria and can give a self-certificate stating that he or she has studied enough to be able to pursue the secondary course, then also the candidate is eligible.

Or,


A candidate, who has studied at the secondary level already but wants to seek admission into the NIOS Secondary Education Program either to complete his or her study or to improve marks, is also eligible to apply for the NIOS Secondary Education Program.

NIOS Details: Senior Secondary Education Program

The Senior Secondary Education Program of NIOS (earlier called National Open School) is equivalent to senior or higher secondary education of the 10+2 education systems of other recognised school education boards of India. Through this program a student can obtain education which is equivalent to class 11 and 12 of the regular education systems of other recognised school education boards in India.

Senior Secondary Education Program: Eligibility


A candidate can apply if his or her age is minimum 15 years or more as on 31st July of the year of admission/on as on 31st January and if he or she has passed class 10 board examination from a recognised secondary education board or successfully completed the NIOS Secondary Education Program.


Documents Required for Admission

The learner must be ready with the scanned copy/soft copy (jpg or jpeg files) of the original documents, which will be required to be uploaded while registering on-line for admission to vocational programmes.

Items Documents required Educational Qualifications

  • Highest qualification marksheet (i.e. class 5, class 8, class 10 or class 12th) or Self Certificate (in case of literate)

  • Age Proof Valid proof for Date of Birth (such as Aadhaar Card with date of birth printed on it in the dd/mm/ yyyy format, Passport, Voter Id, Driving License and Birth Certificate etc.)

  • Proof of Permanent Address A valid proof of Residence (such as Aadhaar Card with complete address printed on it/ Water Bill/ Electricity Bill/Voter ID/Ration Card/Indian Passport)


  • Other Important Documents

Recent passport size color photograph.

Signature on a white paper (preferably in Black Ink).

Valid identity proof (such as Aadhaar Card or passport or ration card or voter–id card etc.).

Social category/caste certificate (in case the learner belongs to SC/ST/OBC category).

BPL certificate (in case the learner belongs to the BPL category).

Ex-serviceman certificate (in case he/she is an Ex-serviceman).

Disability certificate (in case he/she is having any kind of disability).



What is Early Childhood Care & Education (ECCE)?

Early Childhood Care and Education aims to develop a child's emotional, social, and physical needs for a firm, wide-ranging foundation and attaining full potential for lifelong well-being. ECCE is responsible for building capable future citizens. The time of remarkable brain development in children at its peak occurs from birth to eight years old as they are highly influenced by factors, environment, and people surrounding them.

General Objectives of ECCE

  • Fostering social skills

  • Instilling team/sharing attitudes

  • Promotes a holistic development

  • Enhancing age-appropriate use of technology

Course Structure


The course in ECCE consists of Vocational Package comprising of following three subjects:

  1. Understanding the Child (Course Code:439)

  2. Early Childhood Care and Education - Principles and Processes (Course Code:440).

  3. Organizing and Managing an Early Childhood Care and Education Centre (Course Code:441).


Skills Required for ECCE

Children are very different from adults, especially in their sensitivity and grasping power. Teachers are required to have a certain skill set to approach and develop a child that will enable them to motivate and work while finding success and joy each day.

Age Bar and Eligibility

In India, Early childhood education encompasses an ecce diploma course open for everybody. Anyone above the age of 18 is eligible to pursue the ECCE course. The requirement to enroll in the course is a 10+2 level qualification.

Marks of admission vary from institution to institution. Most institutes conduct entrance exams plus interviews.

The course helps in developing skills knowledge, attitude necessary to work with young children and enables them to manage and organize childcare centers such as preschool, nursery school, kindergarten, and daycare centers. The duration of this diploma course is for a year.


Certificate in Computer Application

This course is for those who want to become junior software programmer. The Self Instructional Material and hands on experience will help the learner to identify the basic components of computer and their working, use operating system, use office productivity tools, explain different phases of system development life cycle, draw flowchart, explain database and its purpose, create new database & table, create queries & reports, write simple programs using C programming language.
